Diaper Cakes for Baby Showers

Making diaper cakes for baby showers is a popular and fun way to decorate a table and they make wonderful gifts for the new mom-to-be, too!

When making diaper cakes for baby showers you can use either cloth or disposable diapers.  Using baby bath towels, washcloths, crib sheets or receiving blankets works really well, too.  Incorporate several, or all of these, to make your design a true work of art!

Each tier of your cake can be made using all one color family or a combination of colors and patterns.  Themed diaper cakes are fun to make, too!  Popular themes used are yellow rubber duck, green turtle, frog, and zoo animals.  Be creative, but always keep in mind how your rolled items will look once in your finished product.

Not feeling that creative or have a tight budget? Then just use diapers for your cake.  Add color and decoration by accenting it with ribbon and a few small baby toys.

Now, let's get "baking"...

Here's a photo of the very first one I ever made. It is very simple.  I used disposable diapers, a few washcloths, inexpensive ribbon, and a few baby toys and rattles.  If I made it again, I would have probably folded the blue washcloths in half again so they weren't so tall.  Other than that, I thought it turned out pretty decent for my first one.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAKING

DIAPER CAKES FOR BABY SHOWERS

For the blue cake above you will need:

  • Approximately 50 diapers.  This will make an average size 2 or 3-tier cake, or one large single layer. You'll need more if you want a larger cake or additional tiers.

(Note:  The blue, and pink cake shown below, each contain 50 diapers.)

  • 5 or more washcloths
  • A cake board, sturdy piece of cardboard, or tray to use as a base to put the cake on.
  • Rubber bands, to secure diapers
  • Wide ribbon, miscellanous toys, plastic favors, silk flowers or other items to decorate the "cake" with.

To assemble:

  1. Secure a cardboard paper towel roll to the center of cake board with a bit of hot glue. This will keep cake layers from sliding around.

(Note: This step isn't necessary if you're just  making a single layer cake, although it will keep it from sliding off.  You will also need to cut down the paper towel roll for a single layer.)

  1. Roll each cloth or disposable diaper tightly and secure with a rubber band in center.
  2. Stand each diaper on end and place in a row around paper towel roll. Begin a second, and then a third row around the first, to make the cake as wide as needed. Be sure to note any pattern on the diapers. You will want to be sure that it's facing the same way on your final, or outer row, of each layer.
  3. Once first layer is complete, wrap a wide ribbon around it to hide rubber bands and help secure it all into place. Sometimes an extra pair of hands to hold it while you do this can be very helpful!
  4. Continue the same process for second and third tiers, however, each tier should be a row smaller than the one below it, to get a tiered layer cake look.
  5. Once tiers are secured then decorate it! Additional ribbon, small baby items or toys placed here and there, give a touch of whimsy. Small stuffed animals are cute when “climbing” up the side of cake or when used as a “cake” topper.

Here's another diaper cake that I made for a baby girl shower:
